67 S1
Thought I would remove the alternator but the threaded terminal and nut is completely corroded to the attaching wire.

I had a quick google but can only see brushes advertised. Any suppliers for whatever the threaded part is attached to? Looks like its toast.

Do a bit more googleing and find a local old school alternator/electrical repair service...they will have all the parts..Steve

Or just fit a self regulating 60a unit from an 80's Ford available new for £50. Sacrilege I know.

Thought I was just going to whip off the alternator to degrease the block...
Original V reliable always a tough choice. I'll probably get it repaired and live with it till it lets me down.
Thanks for the tip on the Ford version, if you have any info on brackets and fitting S1 4.1 pulley I'll keep it handy.

James, I’ve searched many a time for such an item without success, for the benefit of all of us who’d like to fit one can you point me in the right direction, please.

You have forced me to remind myself exactly what I purchased!

I am now going into the garage to get some serial numbers.

I may be some time.

One of these should do the job for front wheel drive Fords amongst others. They were used on many different vehicles. You need to purchase a v-pulley version, not a serpentine belt one of course.

Type Ford 55a Alternator into E bay and look at the descriptions to see what they fit. Loads of different cars.

Here some of the reference numbers as thy were copied by loads of firms. A nice Bosch one would be good of course for longevity.

Here are a couple of similar units fitted to my silver and green cars respectively. I pulled the boot. You need the heat shield! Alternators do not like getting too hot. No new brackets required. Just ensure you have shimmed so the pulleys align.

You need to take the 4TR out of the circuit as these alternators self-regulate ( 4TR repros are pretty unreliable in my experience so this is a reason alone for doing it). This is the black plastic thing that lives on the bulkhead under the heater and goes wrong alot. It is a matter of unplugging one wire from memory to complete remove it from the circuit. If you really want to know which wire to unplug it will have to wait until tomorrow because it is cold out there.

James, thank you. Perhaps because you’d suggested above a 60 amp alternator my search under that criteria hadn’t produced the results your 55 amp did. As I already have 60 amp alternators, but needing a 4TR, I was hoping for as capable an alternator but self regulating.

Thanks all for the information. Really helpful and covers all of the options.

My 11ACR has the early W shaped pulley so not sure if its a straight swap on the newer alternators.
I guess there is also some fabrication required to fit the later alternator lugs to the early bracket.
Sounds like I definately need a heat shield. Sound advice. I'll maybe fabricate something from ally as a stopgap

Nearest place that may be able to rebuild mine that I found online is £40 plus parts plus postage etc so probably going to bring it to the 70-80 mark.
Couple of local brit spares guys may know someone who rebuilds them. I'll ask.

SNG are doing a 55amp 11ACR replacement for £107 which now looks like quite a good option and cheaper than all the other suppliers for 11ACR's that I found on line.

Meanwhile...All the front suspension is stripped out ready for plating, radiator and new header tank ready to fit and the drivers side footwell is cut out and being prepared for a replacement. Also deciding whether to pull parts of the front frame off for stripping and painting while I'm there so. I'll put it on my list and mull it over while I tackle the other stuff.
