#1 Odd unknown steering rack for RHD E Type

Post by Maikel » Mon Mar 15, 2021 12:18 pm

Hello,

anybody seen this type of steering rack before? I don't, but have to say is fits a RHD E Type and works lot better than the usual ones. Very smooth and firm.

Please, your input what it came from or what it was used for.

Many thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Hello Maikel,
When I was seeking a RHD rack for my conversion I purchased one online that looked very similar to yours. The most noticeable differences between a usual rack were the rack teeth being bevel like yours and the rack bar itself being significantly narrower than normal. I was convinced at this point that it wasn’t a genuine rack but was one that someone had welded the e type attachment points to.

The seller was adamant that it was a genuine part.
In any event I didn’t fit it and no longer have it.

Hello Tim,

many thanks for your information.
I can add the following.

The steering rack I came across is from the neighborhood here in Germany and was sitting there for decades. Found it there while I was picking up an early diff.

But I also found out, that this is a quality E Type steering made in the past by a company called "SUPRA" or similar. Been told it is an abbreviation of something like "Steering ..... RACKS"
At least that is what I have been explained by a company who are rebuilding racks near Birmingham.
As there was a shortage of RHD steering racks when cars were repatriated to UK, this factory started to manufacture them. They are handed to RHD only, opposed to the generic rack which is used for either, LHD and RHD, only the housing was different originally by Jaguar.

So, this is a proper quality E Type rack, but manufactured during days, when no spares were available anymore.

It is for sale now, 200 GBP is what I paid for.

Can post from Germany or from UK when this Covid disaster in Germany has come to an end and we eventually are heading again for some proper fish and chips.

Don't know if this is any help - but 30 years ago they used MGB racks with modified mountings to fit to RHD converted E-types.
