#1 Xj6 B/V engine for e type.

Post by Paul bow » Sat May 22, 2021 10:52 am

Hi guys,
I’m looking at a xj6 series 3 BV engine the number is 8L 164494-H to put in an e type which was fitted with a v8!! does this number correlate to the BV s3 xj6?
Also am I correct in assuming that the engine is pretty much identical to that of a 4.2 S1?
Thank you 👍

That sounds like a S3 XJ6 number. The engine is perfectly usable in an E although there are some significant structural differences from earlier 4.2 engines, in that the block is ribbed vertically - as with the military engines - and the head and ports are slightly different to accommodate the larger valves . The one aspect which may be slightly more difficult to get right is the induction system and tuning, because in the XJ6 it was used with fuel injection, so there are no standard SU settings . That having been said, if you start from standard UM needles and the usual springs, you will probably not go far wrong, but a rolling road session would be useful. Note also that the XJ S3 used the Lucas electronic distributor with amplifier

Its not almost identical......the block has large ribs cast down the sides. .......you do realise that your supposed to notify dvla of an engine change...or if the car isnt yet registered then you will probably get an inspection...they may not be happy with a non E type engine....Steve
