SNGB offer a kit which apparently strengthens the front stub axle, preventing brake pad push back.
While the kit is pricey the functional piece seems to be a spacer which fits over the axle inside the hub and is presumably held between the inner and outer bearing.
Has anyone used this?
I'd like to make a couple of the spacers but I'm too tight to buy a kit to copy.

Hi Andrew...i was put onto this idea by Bill Angle when i posted about taper bearings, preload and the quite common problem of stub axel wear caused by bearings slipping.....i got a pair from Dennis Welch at a more realistic price....Bill machines his own....have a look here......http://forum.etypeuk.com/viewtopic.php? ... ef#p139986

Hello Andrew,
The main benefit of the spacer, is to lock the bearing solid axially, preventing them from rotating on the stub axle; which the bearings will do normally.
Although some strengthening the stub axle assembly results, because the stub axle is put in slight tension and the larger diameter spacer in compression, the benefit of that is infinitesimal in the whole scheme of things. The big advantage is in stopping the bearings from spinning.
Regards,
Bill

So why not just Loctite the inner bearing to the stub axle to prevent the rotation?

The fit of the bearings on the Stub Axle is a running fit and is made so for no other reason than to make servicing easier for the mechanic. If the inner bearing in particular were to be an interference fit, as it should be, then any time the hub had to be removed from the axle, a puller would be needed to remove the hub to pull it from the inner seal that will be retained by the inner bearing, which will be left behind by virtue of the interference fit. Then a further operation to remove the inner bearing from the axle, also requiring a puller. Using Loctite will result in the same scenario. So why not just Loctite the inner bearing to the stub axle to prevent the rotation?

Yes, same principle; its not a novel idea and universally used on race cars that have opposing, taper roller wheel bearings in a similar set up to an E Type.
There is absolutely nothing high tech about the front wheel bearings of an E Type and other Jaguars using the same front wheel bearing arrangement. The same bearings and outer section of the stub axle is used on your garden variety small box trailer.

Hello Greg,Looks very similar to the system used in the Austin Healey 3000.

I cant really remember seeing a front Jag stub axel that didnt have wear caused by tbe bearing spinning. .....so seams an obvious choice to fit the spacer. ....Steve
