#1 V12 engine dying

Post by mgcjag » Fri Sep 10, 2010 5:31 pm

Hi All..looking for some pointers.....My friends S3 has just arrived back in the UK after a tiip to the south of France unfortunatly on the back of an RAC truck after dying in Lyon on the return trip. The symptoms...driving at approx 60-80mph a sudden loss of power..full throttle can keep the car running at the lower revs very smooth with no splutering.untill pulled over & stopped & the engine then cuts out, the car then restarts sometines almost immediatly & sometimes after approx 10 mins......this happened once on the outbound drive to Dover...& then on quite a few times on the return drive home....The original ignition system was replaced several months ago with the upgraded SNG Opus along with coil /leads/ plugs etc....Does this sound like fuel delivery or ignition?..Thanks Steve

I would still suspect the Opus which does not respond well to excessive heat. Having made the mistake of driving through Lyon (it looks so easy on the map - Autoroute all the way  ) I can testify the heat build up in the tunnel can quickly get out of control. Suggest you speak to these people: http://www.reopus.co.uk./ and their web site has lots of useful information. The secret is in the RE part of Reopus.

If it happened after you installed the new kit it would be reasonable to think that is where the problem lies.

Hi David....Had no overheating problems on the trip........the fault is definatly not in the ignition......once one side of the dual pump was identified as faulty i could run on one pump ok...but when reconnected somehow the second pump would interfeer with the fuel flow from the good one causing the engine to die........Up and running fine now...Thanks Steve....Ps round trip fuel 17mpg
