#1 Running-in oil

Post by carlv12 » Fri Oct 08, 2010 9:20 am

Hello,

I am restoring/repairing my E Type V12 engine changing pistons, liners, rings, inlet and exhaust valves, valve inserts, bearings, timing chain and parts, cylinder head and much more parts.....

Does it make sense to use first a running-in oil and after 500 miles the correct 20W50 or 20W50 mineral oil?

Thank you and best regards from Valencia

Carlos

Makes perfect sense. A thousand mile on running in oil is recommended on most rebuilds

Thank you for the answer. But I still do not know what exaCTLY MAKES THE RUNNING-IN OIL BETTER THAN a good mineral 20W50. Please try to explain. Thank you

It is my belief that the running in oil contains no detergents. Its allows the cam shaft and rings to bed in while protecting the other major components

Try Millers oils in Google

Carl

Ordinary engine oil is perfectly OK although you should probably stick with mineral rather than synthetic and opt for 10W40. Change the oil and filter after 1,000 miles or whatever Jaguar recommend.
