#1 Fuel pump problem or...

Hi all,
a few years back I had to replace the old pump in my -67 S1 2+2 , did so with a new electronic one. This spring I took the car for a first short run. Stopped at a point and when trying start again the battery was dead (battery had been maintained all winter), jump started downhill, almost at home it stopped again. I could now determine that the pump had broken down. Bought a new one, working all summer, no problem with battery/charging. Yesterday the new gave up as well. Anyone had this problem, is it just bad luck or could it have been some kind of spikes as the pump is electronic, bad voltage regulator?
Any help much appreciated
