#1 E-type SII - Clutch grind noise when pedal depressed

Greetings E-Type UK!
Looking for help diagnosing a clutch grind
It will be a while before I can pull the engine and have a look, so seeing if there's any ideas here.
1970 Series II
The main points:
- Something rotating rubbing something stationary when pedal depressed (metallic)
- Grind stops when pedal fully depressed
- Does not grind as pedal is being released, only depressed
- Grind is consistent in intensity and pedal depth each time
- 300 miles drives without issue since new aluminum flywheel, new Borg & Beck 10" clutch, new release bearing, new clutch slave installed late 2018
- Aware of loose clutch slave stud, in the process of fixing. Don't think it's directly related to grind but ?
Clutch kit installed:

Video / audio of grind:

Jon

Peculiar : does this happen only with the vehicle stationary and in neutral ? Or also when changing gear on the move ? And is it really a grind, as in a grind of gears, or a rub ?
One thing I would check is that you do not have excessive end float on the crankshaft ( IIRC 4 thou is the upper limit ) because it might be possible if that were the case for the ring gear to just touch the starter pinion when the pedal is pressed, but this would not happen as the pedal was released
The other possibilities seem to me to be a problem with the clutch release bearing, or even a rough spot on either the clutch or flywheel

Yes, after startup. Even with pedal fully depressed, the clutch wasn't engaged so trying to put into gear resulted in a grind of the gears.
Hard to say what to label it. The video from under the car captures the noise pretty well. Sounds to me it's a rubbing of something that is metal. Starts in last 1/4 of clutch travel then as pedal pressed more, it gets worse.
I feel like it's more likely something with the throwout bearing hitting some part of the pressure plate cover because I can feel the rub in the pedal. Also, the friction plate and pressure plate are all spinning so I don't think the parts moving together are rubbing together.

Er...no, the friction plate is ( or should be) stationary when the pedal is depressed. I hadn't realised this was a gear grinding noise. This is a very common problem and is often the result of the slave cylinder pushrod not being long enough, so that in bleeding the clutch the piston is not pushed back far enough when the pedal is released, so that there is insufficient stroke on the piston to release the clutch completely when the pedal is depressed
PS and the slave cylinder wandering round the way it is doing only exacerbates the problem

Hi
Yes, It's strange that the slave cylinder is moving about. I would start by ensuring that it is firmly secured before doing anything else.
My immediate thought is that the noise is happening when the thrust bearing meets the pressure plate. I seem to recall some recent issues with mixing and matching thrust bearings, pressure plates and throw out arms. Might be worth researching on the forum.

Hi Jon....should be quite easy to see whats going on by useing an endescope to look inside the bellhouseing...fairly cheap.....Steve

Christopher, no the noise is something rubbing in the clutch, inside the bellhousing. I was saying if trying to put into gear, the gears grind. In the video, I am not moving the gearshift, just depressing the clutch pedal.
Yes I agree, currently working on fixing that loose clutch slave stud before further testing.

Steve, yes I've been poking around in there, still very hard to see the top half of the clutch fork / TOB where the retainer pin is, bottom is easily visible through bellhousing hole. Just curious to see that area to see if there's any shiny metal anywhere, haven't seen anything suspect yet. And just bought a 1 5/16" socket to turn the crank bolt so I can inspect parts of the pressure plate while the motor turns.

There is a thin steel stone guard plate bolted on the lower front of the bell houseing.....have a look that its in place....probably isnt the issue but worth looking at.....Steve

Good point, what was the answer ?
We lose heart when confronted by questions from posters who then go dead on us

Not that you are going to get an answer from a dead thread, but if this admission means the clutch slave cylinder could move about, then it probably wasn't fully disengaging the clutch, was it?
kind regards
