#1 Starter grinding

S2 US 4.2 OTS. I‘ve installed an interim engine, S3 XJ6, using my original bellhousing and cleaned up starter. The flywheel is used, having some marks from previous „not-so-nice“ fitting pinion, I guess. Engine is hooked up and starts fine (seems to be lean on one Stromberg though). Occasionally on startup the pinion does not set and grinds. On second attempt no issue. After cleaning the pinion seemed to work, no excessive wear. Is the pinion not engaging fully, should I adjust the pinion a bit further towards the flywheel? The arrow on the excenter bolt is pointing at 1 o‘clock, I would go to 3 o‘clock right? Or, If further engagement is the missing, could not the spigot be removed to gain some 1/8“? I‘m not too worried since eventually the original engine and flywheel are going back in. But the grinding annoys me a bit and I don‘t want the flywheel to be damaged to the degree of non-functioning. So, please any advice?
