#1 Removal of rear brake calipers

Post by Desmo » Mon Mar 14, 2022 7:32 pm

Hello,

I would like to overhaul the brake system of my 3.8 coupe. Is it possible to remove the rear brake calipers without unscrewing the entire rear axle cage? Maybe by removing the shock absorber units etc.
Thank you for your advices.

Best regards
John

I've never tried it; it looks pretty hard.

You would need to remove the shocks and probably the rear half shafts.

Having done this there are 2 holes in the discs which enable access to the bolts that hold the calipers on their brackets. These bolts are lock wired in place so you'd need to be able to cut and remove those.

Once you've got those bolts out you'd need to wangle the calipers and hand brakes around and off the disc. I'm not sure if you'd need to separate the handbrakes first.

Reassembling, you'd need to be able to get the calipers and the handbrakes back onto the discs, then manage to reinstall the caliper bolts, which are behind the disc. They need to be lock wired on for safety.

Personally I would drop the IRS and take the diff unit out of the cage. You then have 360 degree access to the caliper and discs and nothing to obstruct you removing and replacing the calipers over the disc.

Andrew is quite correct.

The opening line of the rear caliper removal section in the Jaguar service manual is "the rear suspension unit must be removed to withdraw the rear calipers".

While it's not trivial, it's easier to remove the rear suspension than most people imagine. Once you remove it, however, you will likely deal with many other issues "while you are there" so the project can snowball. But it should be good for another 50 years if you do it all well.

And take the opportunity to add remote brake bleeders to the calipers while everything is accessible.

I regret not fitting the remote bleeding when I had the opportunity that’s for sure.
