IRS, Wishbone to Radius Arm Bolt

Hi,
I've just begun assembly of the wishbones onto the diff and cage but thought I'd check that the special bolts would fit without problem.
1. I don't quite understand why the unthreaded portion of the bolt doesn't extend the whole length of the bush. Is the bolt wrong? If I fit it then there will be threaded portion under the bush which doesn't quite seem right.
2. There is counterbore in the wishbone at the head end of the bolt. Should the head be pulled into this when you tighten it so that it doesn't foul the hub carrier? The hole looks round whereas if that was the case you might expect it to be hexagonal.

The bolt is a special as you note. The head is thin and pulls into the wishbone.
Having said that your bolt doesn’t look right, when pulled so that the head is flush it looks as though you will still have a threaded portion inside the bush which is not correct.

I agree the bolt does not look correct. The bolt head appears too thick, which may cause fouling with the hub carrier, and the threaded portion should be shorter, with loo threaded in the bushing area.

I've done a bit more digging and it looks as if this bolt may be for the S2 which has the bolt inserted from the other direction with a nut on the threaded portion. This allows the radius arm to be removed without disturbing the hub carrier.
Having said that, both S1 and S2 parts catalogues list C17149/1 as being the part. Has anyone had the same issue?

Hi Phil...i think the bolt with the thin head to sit in the recess is c17149......when Jaguar changed the bolt to fit the other way around it was a superceeded by number C17149/1 the head was modified with part of the hex cut off....this photo is an original bolt(that fits from outside like yours)..sorry dont have it so cant measure the unthreaded portion. That looks spot on. What I don't understand is why the 4.2, S1 parts catalogue says C17149/1 and SNG and Robey's only stock the /1.
I'll talk to Andy at Hutson who supplied it to see if he has a source for the correct part. It may be OK as is but it's not right from an engineering standpoint.

I havent looked at all the parts catalogues.....and the possible date/ car number when they changed.....its definatly C17149 in the 3.8 catalogue......the later bolt is very different with part of the hex top cut off.....Steve
