car original engine and gearbox where can I check

Hi where can I find out if the car S1 I am building has the original engine and gearbox . I think the bellhousing is wrong because it has an inspection hole on the left on top.

This info is normally on the Heritage Certificate. You need to provide the chassis number.
Is the data plate not on the car?

A quick initial and decent indicator is the ID tag on the right sill extension in eng compartment. It will have eng number and trans number, chassis…. Yes it could be a restamp but unlikely unless the car has bee restored previously. Heritage cert will rule of course.

Trans number is stamped on the top cover of the trans. If its a 4.2 S1 it has an insp hole at flywheel on left upper side. There’s a TDC mark on the flywheel that can be viewed there. Not sure on the Moss box, Ill check mine later if no one confirms.

The inspection hole on the bell housing goes way back - pre war? Disappeared with the S2 introduction I believe.

JHT will not tell you what the numbers were. Usually they will merely confirm, or deny, that the numbers you give them are those originally fitted, or not as the case may be. In other words, you must give them the numbers that you find on the car before they will comment. Incidentally, if you still have the enigne in pieces both the crank and the flywheel should have the number stamped somewhere ( usually on the periphery of the flywheel IIRC)
