#1 Lucas Ignition switch

Post by PainswickEType » Sun May 15, 2022 6:02 pm

Hi, just removed the ignition switch from the back of the steering lock, as it has basically fallen apart. Just looking online at replacing it and came across this:

https://www.autoelectricalspares.co.uk/ ... 1052-p.asp

Apart from having an F suffix and a different 4 digit number, it looks identical. It was fitted to Jaguars and Daimlers from '74.

Can anyone tell me please if this is the same item? It is half the price of the one Barratts are selling!

The old one:

Hi Neil....im no ignition switch expert. .....the white pink wire is odd on your photo....im thinking your switch is possibly an xj6 switch......could have been replaced previously .....E type typically have a 4 way connector. ...cant see your connector but the link you show is a 6 way.......you can use other switches but they need rewiring and key positions may be different.....Steve

Hi Steve. Thanks for that. Yes, not sure that my switch is original. I have an ex California car fitted with steering lock. The switch fits into the back of the key unit. Although there are six positions on the plug, only three were in use, the others blanked. None of the wires from the loom actually matched the input to the switch! So the one on the Lucas website might just be the same. I'm not terribly worried about authenticity, as long as it looks ok and is reliable!

Yes it seems obvious now! I think I will go for the new Lucas one and wire it up identically. Should do the trick.

Thanks Steve

Not so simple! Out of stock wherever I look! I will have to start looking for a second hand one.

Problem now sorted. I found an almost identical switch on Ebay, advertised as an E Type series 3 switch with a completely different Lucas part no. The only difference I could see, was that my switch had two yellow/white wires on a starter relay output. The smaller gauge of the two yellow/white wires wasn't present on the Ebay one. Easily rectified by using the empty corresponding bullet socket on the opposite side of the connector.

I don't know if anyone has experience of re-assembling one of these switches? I have tried for hours to put the old one back together. I can more or less see how the contact rotor goes into the housing, but trying to suss the position of the spring is just impossible!!

Steve thanks for all your advice.

I have already spent a couple of evenings in front of the tv fiddling with it and even got my mate who is a retired chief design engineer to have a quick butchers. I got it under a magnifier to see if I could see any register where the spring sat. I guess there is no rush now and I can fiddle to my hearts content. It goes without saying that the moral for anyone else thinking of taking one apart is to do it very very slowly and to take note of the spring position. Mine pinged out before I had a chance!
