#1 Girling Power Stop 5204 in D-Type ?

Morning,

A friend of mine has problems with his alloy D-Type replica.

He says both brake servos are more or less defective / rotten, and said they are Power Stop 5204 units, 2 of them.

They seem to be rather expensive- any advice where to buy, or send them away to be overhauled ?

I've had two replicas with no servo and am finishing off a third. Your friend has two on a single car?

On such a light car with road tyres it's my view that you only want brakes that lock up under extreme pressure, not inadvertently. Scrap the servos and try various softer pad types and cylinder diameters (smaller master(s)) and only go to servo if you can't get what you want any other way.

I am mystified about how a car has two servos. If it is dual circuit and each has a separate servo,( which is about the only scenario I can envisage where there might be two servos ) it is a recipe for disaster, because if one servo should fail , gross imbalance would result, and the handling consequences if the failure were of the front servo would almost certainly be a catastrophic loss of control resulting from rear lock up. I agree with Peter - ditch the lot

Hey guys,

Thats interesting. I will get pictures of their installation. The car belongs to PS Speicher, Europe‘s biggest vehicle collection. Its basically a Lynx I think, was an E- Type S2 coupe former in its life, and has an alloy body. We talked about it ages ago I think. Did I not upload pictures of it ?

Now, they called me as I designed all of their electrical systems and they know me restoring an E, and told me that the D does not really brake well, they wanted to take it out for their annual ralley (I will be there in the Traction this year, the E being painted) 8-) , and asked me what to do. They already found Limora /SC offering exchange units for 750 each, and clearly said 1500 seems a lot and wether I might have an idea. One unit was opened by them, conclusion was „its a heap of rust internally“.

But it seems they lately decided to put it back in storage, repair it later, because time is running out for their annual, so no need to rush.

How would you convert it back, then ? Fit the correct setup for the S2 E it was ?

I was promised to get a drive in it for my help so yes, we have to get it goin‘ … ! :policeblue:

Ok I was now told that a standard E Type servo would not fit in the chassis of the D, so they fitted a normal master brake cylinder with 2 outlets. And put two 5204 units into the sill, which get actuated by the two master cyl outlets.

How is a „normal“ D type replica constructed - is this the „normal“ equipment or has someone ran over the top here ?

Hi Carsten....there is a very good facebook site run by the JDC for Historic and Replica Jags.....you will get an answer there as there are plenty with replica D,s that use the site..Steve https://m.facebook.com/groups/176178759 ... ef=m_notif

Hi,

I tried to join, but did not get any response yet.

Here are some pictures- as you can see, your feet are in some kind of tunnel, where the pedals are. On top of the tunnel there is an arm which actuates a cylinder which actuates 2 cylinders, and that setup can be adjusted. Hard to describe, easy to recognize how it works when you look at it.

From the 2 brake cylinders, there are metal pipes going to the LH sill front edge, where the 2 power units sat.

I see no way to fit an E unit.

This D Type is completely made from alloy.
