Does anyone know the diameter and pitch of the differential output shaft for a Series 1 E-type?

I measure the pitch to be 16tpi. I also measure the major diameter as between 0.987" and 0.990". This would make the thread a UNS for Unified Special that does have a nominal thread diameter of 15/16" and a major diameter of 0.9375".

I have some damaged threads on my output shaft for my 1963 FHC 887030. I've dressed them with a thread file, but the starting thread is buggered and I'd like to get a die to fix it properly. Thanks for the help!

Well, sometimes I get my numbers confused! Must be an age thing!!

My measurements indicate the output shaft outer (major) dia. is 0.991" at its most. This does not suggest the shaft nominal size is 15/16" which has a major dia. of 0.9375". So I don't know what I was thinking. It does suggest the output shaft may be 1"" in diameter. Or some other size.

Assuming the thread is nominal 1.0", a UNC would have 8tpi, a UNF would be 12tpi, and a UNEF would have 20 tpi. But all of those have a major diameter of 1.0". A UNS (Unified Special) is still a valid thread with 16tpi though, so perhaps that's what this is.

Forget the 15/16" thread; I was off base there.

I think that is plainly a 1 inch shaft - you are only 9 thou short of the full diameter in your measured major diameter, and I think you are correct in assessing it as a UNS thread

Hi Scott.....just for info the axel shaft nut on a 1960 xk150 Salisbury axel is 1in unf 14tpi.....so worth you looking at as it was a standard size and may have followed onto the E type.....NB...1in unf is typically listed as 12tpi....but 14tpi is an older standard (uns?).....sorry dont know the details...but 1in unf needs the tpi checked to tell what you actually have.......Steve

Thanks Steve. I know you're following on the U.S. topic and it does concern me that the earlier XKs used a 14 tpi shaft. I have checked this over and over with my thread gauge and it does not fit a 14 tpi gauge, nor an 18 tpi, and it fits perfectly for a 16 tpi. I've ordered a 1"-16 die and I'll make a sample shaft - plastic or copper or ? - to make sure the nut fits. This is a one-shot fix, so I'm trying not to screw it up! (pun intended).
