#1 Timing chain vernier adjuster

Hi I am just finishing building a 4.2 engine. When I tighten up the nut that holds the vernier wheel in place it locks up .Just putting a very thin washer behind the wheel its ok. Has anyone come across this before .

I am puzzled about your description. The adjuster plate is meant to "lock up" when you have adjusted the chain to your satisfaction. It is then held in place radially by the spring loaded pop-out plunger,( so that the eccentric which governs the chain tension cannot slip out of adjustment ) and axially by the locknut ( so that the adjuster plate cannot fall off)

As above, it's supposed to lock.
On the diagram below there is a coarse shake proof washer under the nut. It is most important you have this washer as it prevents the nut from loosening and potentially falling into your engine.
The toothed plunger is only there to enable you tighten the chain before you lock it down with the nut.
