The 5 Speed is here……..
#1 The 5 Speed is here……..
Well The Guy Broad box has arrived.
My threads are usually started and completed in two daysbut because my 1960 AC Aceca is still waiting on its carb rebuild it might take a couple of weeks to switch the cars on the rack.
Once we get going I will detail step by step .
Let’s reserve politics and brand boxes once the final verdict and test drives are done.
I’ve had them all…..so banter on quality and no return phone calls will be for another time.
Just sticking to the swap!
So
I had a custom drive shaft made brand new.
New u joints greased and all
The original bell housing is used.
My one piece light weight flywheel is reused but sending back to CJ to rebalance with the Guy Broad clutch.
I’m dropping the unit from below .
Transmission breather pipe is moot.
Original rear spring mount is moot.
The trick rear mount is of Aston DB design with twin rubber bushes , more stability .
They say my stock throw out bearing is best so I just ordered a new one.
This should be fun guys
Stay tuned!!!

I have one of Guys 5 speed in mine, it is brilliant, that and the 4 pot calipers make the E much more drivable.

Let’s review one at a time……
First the Throw out bearing, it’s standard stock jaguar design.
Why I added 3 or 4 pictures is because if you order the same throw out bearing from
5 major suppliers you will get 5 slightly off sizes!
Over the years SNG had the best in overall size and depth.
So in this car we went with the SNG.
I will only say this once…..
E Type repro parts are a huge crap shoot at best no matter who supplies them!
The above part too me gave the best pedal feel and height.
Other suppliers were either to short or too tall creating a funny height pedal and grab. Imho
Gtjoey1314
This was not with the kit

Next , The speedo cable.
Basically standard on the speedo side I will add a dot of clear grease to the cable end.
The other side is completely created for this box .
A stock E Type cable will not work.
Looks trick and clean with the C clip design

The shifter knob and assembly….
The kit comes with the brushed D Type knob and shaft and It might be a welcome change!
But I had 3 shift balls from
Other applications
The left is too small and the finish is terrible
The large black and white is way too big!
The right one is a hair bigger than stock but really as good as it gets!
That one I think was SNG from years ago
It will be a toss up from stock to brushed pistol
Shifter

Lastly for today the driveshaft and the Nyloc nuts and washers for the bell housing.
The nuts and washers are self evident but later inspection will reveal 7 studs to the box not 8!
This is due to the fact that the throw out arm needs more room!
The drive shaft is a work of art.
Custom made with new U joints leaving us NO guess work at all!
It’s so heavy duty putting stock to shame.
It all adds up to a much better driving car!
Gtjoey1314
Hope your enjoying!

After installation the speedo will require calibration as it will be 10mph out.

Danny , due to the gear in the box?
If so 10 mph faster or slower?
Since I put a 307 rear I didn’t calculate the speedo yet!

I have driven a Broadsport E-Type; impressions here: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1139
1. You may want to go with the D-Type shifter as I found my knuckles hit the radio console with the stock knob because of the way you grab it.
2. You may want to get a standard flywheel balanced at the same time as the lightweight one. I find E-Type's with lightweight flywheels jerky to drive and do not match the smoothness of the 6 cylinder engine.
Look forward to your experiences Joey as are a few people from J-L who are missing you

#13 Re: The 5 Speed is here……..
Great old Thread Heuer!
Before we get to the picture , I recieved a couple of text so not to confuse people.
Before this purchase I was waiting on a first NEW box from a major supplier as a test bed but 5th gear was not working to the companies standards and long term testing is still going on.
Second , Jaguar Heritage has created their OWN box that used a stock clutch and all the rest but was pushing it with 14,000 paid up front and it might come in 6 months with no history or driving miles.
So here we are!
I called Broadsport to see if there was any special oil .
He said use standard old sae80’w90.
No synthetic just regular to keep noise down as well.
Any thoughts?
Gtjoey1314
I’m picking up the Carbs for the Aceca today!
Hopefully the Etype is on the rack by early next week

#14 Re: The 5 Speed is here……..
On mine it was reading 30mph while real speed was 40mph. That was with a standard S1 3.8 rear diff In fact it had to go back to Guy and took three weeks of waiting for the chap who does calibrations to return the speedo. Also there was a problem with the installation of the alternator on the conversion from Pos to Neg earth that caused the car to chew up belts which they had to fix.

The Ac is up and running!
Another week and the Etype is on the rack!
Boy the Etype is about 1,000 years ahead of the A/C
It’s a better handling 120.
Can’t wait to get the 5 speed in!!!
