Hi Chaps
I have a weird noise coming from my oil filter housing on my 3.8 S1 OTS it’s only on idle and when warm. The noise sounds like a continuous squeal/high pitch hum. It’s very loud and goes away soon as you increase the RPM. I have good oil pressure 40 + psi. The noise has been there for at least 500 miles. I suspect it may be the spring in the non return valve or oil rushing through or past the filter. I plan to change the filter first.
Have anyone had a similar noise ?

I don't like the sound of that . It's not something I've ever encountered. I should change the filter before running the engine again if I were you , and it would be a good idea to check the pressure relief valve while you are doing that

That’s the plan the noise could be drawing air in from the suction pipe. Hope not because it’s a sump of job !

Sounds like the relief valve. Test it by clamping the hose closed.

I will give it a squeeze to restrict the oil but not close it of completely. I have seen oil filters blow off when the relief valve gets stuck ! Admittedly it was on a Porsche 944 though.

Update on the Squeal. Noise Gone……
I eventually got time to change the oil filter and to my surprise the filter had not been replaced for donkeys years!
It was so brittle it fell into pieces when extracting.
I bought the car at a well known auction being sold with a full restoration and yes you might say “a full restoration not changing the oil filter!” This leads me to believe maybe the rest of the engine is not up to scratch! Also the cylinder head slightly seeps oil and wasn’t torqued down correctly so when I replace the gasket I will inspect the engine. Oh yeah I can see it’s fitted with a composite gasket which I believe the machining has to be perfect so I will probably replace it with a standard gasket. Before anyone comments of Caveat emptor…….
Still happy with the car it’s lovely.

Mark, glad to hear you’ve solved the problem. It sounds like you will have a busy winter checking over the car, maybe new oil, brake fluids, coolant, etc. Just to be on the safe side, after all if they missed fitting a new filter what else got missed. Are you a member of any club? As suppliers such as SNG Barratt do give a discount to some club members and the discount can easily be more than the cost of membership. Though this forum is the best place for all advice and questions and doesn’t cost a penny to join!

I've done it on an E type. Misassembled the valve. Oil everywhere.
