#1 Expansion tank broken

Post by DWW » Wed Sep 21, 2022 6:19 pm

Today I decided to check my coolant level and to my astonishment I discovered signs of leaks on top of the tank. Let the engine reach working temp and the tank was like a spring splattering out coolant as the pressure increased. I am not sure what crap tank was put on there and hope the new one ordered from SNGB will fare better. In the mean time I temporarily sealed up both pin holes with the trusty JB Weld and all seems well.

You should get one of these:

Not only look superb by matching the curvature of the bonnet and cam covers but will last forever! Why Jaguar spoiled the engine bay with the hideous oblong header tank I will never understand. Return the stock one to SNGB and buy the CMS one.

Thanks guys, I did consider Aluminium tanks most around the £500 mark which look very nice and of excellent quality but obviously require some investment. I decided to stick with the steel one for the now as it is more affordable and looks closer to the original but certainly not ruling out upgrading in the future.

So I’m feeling confused. :wow: When there are postings about cars being sold, there seems to bit a lot of raised eyebrows over detailed parts not being identical (copies) to original, something that I would refer to as “horn push syndrome”. Doesn’t the replacement of a header tank with a shiny chrome version fit into this category ?

Notwithstanding the fact that DWW can do what he likes with his car

It all depends on how the car is being advertised.
If it’s being sold as ‘restored to original spec’, ‘concourse restoration’ or ‘mint original’ etc etc then you can expect some raising of the eyebrows if elements have been changed/upgraded/poor replacement parts used.

Otherwise, it’s down to personal choice/taste.

As far as my own car is concerned, it already had quite a few upgrades (five speed, front brakes, starter, alternator, cooling etc', but kept all the original parts) so it isn't concourse nor is it as it left the factory. My only consideration is that I am not quite ready to spend that much on an expansion tank at this point in time. Incidentally I received mine today from SNGB and it looks a better quality tank than the one I had on (about four years), so we are on to a 'good' start there.

This happened to me:
Image

Is an 1.5 year old steel expansion tank from sngb.
I was hoping someone has some experiens with the brass expension tank.
Might be a better option.
I never considered a aluminium tank, but now I'm having doubts.

Ok, after much consideration and as per David's and Angus's recommendation I went ahead and ordered the curved polished aluminum header tank, last one they had in stock, from Cambridge Motorsport, should be with me in a day or two. Thanks for the recommendation.

Blingtastic!
Did you specify a particular pressure cap? If not, just check what they supply as from memory I think the one that came with mine was too high.

Thanks for the heads up, I called to enquire and they don’t supply the cap any longer for that very reason and recommend using the original.
