#1 UT OOHH GTJOEY /Magoletsi kit

Post by gtjoey » Sat Oct 29, 2022 12:10 pm

It’s been killing me for years…..
Like the Glorious Guy Broad 5 speed I will do step by step.
Note
This is a left hand conversion NOT the easy right hand shorty so we will go through this together.
It won’t be for awhile though as I need a break and will start this when my seats go out to OSJI or to old timers
Gary Bartlett.
So sit back and probably after the fall season and another 1,000 miles to break in my car we attempt this!
Looks to be a real top quality piece of kit!
Ps Staff at E Type forum keeps telling me to pump you guys up😂
I asked Porter about lifetime membership
😃
Love you guys…

I designed and built my own cable cable linkage some years ago, and found it to be the single best modification to any car I've owned. LHD E type linkages are simply not very good even when properly adjusted. Decided to go this route after driving a RHD car and was amazed at the difference it makes to have less bell cranks, direction changes, and pivot points. And I took the opportunity to move the rear float bowl, one of those incongruous things that bothered me a lot. I'm funny like that.

Going to be watching this with interest Joey! As I mentioned Angus has done the LHD conversion (I did the first RHD one) and being the perfectionist he is he ran the cables along the bulkhead to avoid cluttering the engine view (click to enlarge):

It will be fun
This set up is the 3rd rail out there!

You know I was always on the fence but here’s what happened
With the 5 speed the gears are so spread out that when you floor it in 4Th or 5th the pedal hits the tunnel
Cut out and your done!
LHD of course ..
It won’t be for a bit though

Always wondered about “odd man out” fuel bowl. Great idea. It looks like the headers are ceramic coated?
How many miles do you have them?

Those headers had about 20k miles on them when I took those photos. They are ceramic coated stainless, and the ceramic held up very well over that time and is so much better than bare stainless for continuous good looks, with the benefit of lower under bonnet temps.

They have since been replaced early this year with (ceramic coated) headers from ClassicFabs.

Joey,

Car is LHD

The float bowl relo is simple: remove the float bowl and turn it 180, and replace the float bowl cover to match the front two (bought mine from Burlen). You may be able to reuse the original 'lefty' bowl cover, but I was after tidy aesthetics. The fuel rail was a stock and somewhat tired one I bought off of Ebay, which I bead blasted back to bare copper and brass then cut/bent/re-soldered the one end to line up with the new float bowl location. Had it polished and plated, so it looks very stock. I've had the car to many British car shows in the 10 years or so since I did the cable conversion, and several E-type owners have noted the cable, but not one has noticed the float bowl change.

Note that I don't think you can change the float bowl position with the stock 4.2 linkage in place.
