#1 Heavy clutch

Post by flatfloor 3.8 » Wed Nov 09, 2022 4:56 pm

Does anyone know if a brand new Borg and Beck diaphragm clutch is heavier to push down than an old original AP diaphragm clutch. I have changed the clutch in my brothers car and it seems very heavy to push down compared with my car that has a NOS AP clutch.

The diaphragm clutch cover of whatever make was made to have a lighter operating pressure than the traditional coil spring clutch covers. This was mainly introduced to "assist" ladies who were concerned over the pedal force required to drive the larger engine cars. Lighter pressure also extended the life of the old carbon type release bearings. My personal view would be to fit the coil spring cover as they are smoother in engagement and tend to last longer, very useful on an E type as you do not want to be taking the engine/box out every month.
