#1 Oil pressure relief valve

Post by tim wood » Mon Nov 28, 2022 6:15 pm

As part of my change to a spin on oil filter I thought that I would take off and clean / rebuild the filter block assembly.
It was pretty gungy but nothing amiss. Just to complete this I thought that I would renew the valve spring. Nothing wrong with my pressure by the way. I purchased and fitted a “new old stock” valve spring from a well know seller on eBay. It came in a jaguar bag so I’m confident it’s original.
On comparison with my existing one that’s 50+ years old it’s about 6mm longer.

I’m going to fit the assembly and see what occurs. Will update once I’ve done that

Interesting.
When I bought a replacement spring from SNGB, the new spring was shorter than the old one.
Old one bronze colour and new one silver colour in the picture below:

Interesting.
I’ve assembled and fitted the filter unit but not yet run the engine. I’m not sure what expect anyway.

The new spring was definitely longer than the old. The colour of both was similar and not silver on the new.

How did yours perform?

I have remounted the old one.
My low oil pressure issue is described here: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=19209

I ahve just bought a mechanical gauge, braided hose and adaptors.
I have not had time yet to check if that issue will be resolved (doubt it, but it is a necessary check).
Currently in the process of fitting the components on the engine, through the front shield and on the dashboard.
Will report results...

Hi, just to close this off.
The fitment of the spin on conversion went well and easy to do. Overhaul of the filter head likewise. As I mentioned at the start of this thread I replaced the relief spring with a new one.
As a result oil pressure may be slightly higher when hot and running- not that it was an issue anyway. Overall I’m happy that it’s done.

The job escalated into fitting a new clutch slave ( badly needed) and powder coating of the inner wing panels.
