Mike, I’m sure there was a thin cork/rubber gasket under the door handles on my S2, whether or not it was original I don’t know. But I replaced it with a thin piece of closed cell grey foam and cut it neatly around the handle shape. Grey to sort of match the chrome and not be particularly seen against the blue paintwork. When the handle is tightened down you can not see it. You could try that. Closed cell to not allow water in.

Hi Mike
I think I remember seeing some advertised on eBay once, but I don't think that there were any fitted in the factory? If you have an old inner tube kicking around, they would be fairly straightforward to fabricate yourself.
As for stopping water getting inside the door, that will be impossible. What is important is that the drains in the bottom of the doors are fully clear, and that the correct seal is fitted around the door aperture. This seal has a couple of small scallops that line up with the door drains making sure that the door is able to drain when the door is closed. That's the arrangement on a S2 car, and I'm sure a S1 car will be no different?
