#1 Crankshaft Damper

Post by chrisc261 » Wed Mar 15, 2023 3:47 pm

Hello All,
Crankshaft Damper seemed to delaminate today. Obviously I need a new one. Should I sick with standard type, or go for one of the Harmonic Dampers? The engine is standard tune 1962 3.8. Just wondering if it is worth the expense. Thanks very much.
Chris.

Hi

They are all harmonic dampers and there should be no reason to depart from the standard damper if your engine is to the standard specs. So there is no need to go to the extra expense. It's probably best that you don't run the car too much if the existing one has come apart.

I don't know what the general feeing about the reproduction "standard" dampers is but if there is a tendency for early failure then it might be worth buying something like the ATI damper. The good news with these is that they can be re-built at relatively low cost if they do fail or get damaged.

You could speak to or email ATI to get their view. I understand they are very approachable although I don't have personal experience of them.

Regards
Stuart

They do eventually fall apart after 50+ years. The outer ring is glued to the central portion with vulcanised rubber which degrades over time.

I had one fail recently.viewtopic.php?f=3&t=19568&p=159111&hilit=tinkle#p159111

SNGB sell a repro one https://www.sngbarratt.com/English/#/UK ... armonic%60.

I bought and fitted one. I have no reason to believe that it won't work.
