The 'E' Type Forum

So I searched the forum but could not find this answer...
On a 1968 S1,5 FHC E-type can you change the clutch without dropping the complete engine or will the driveshaft not let me.
The engine does not engage in 1st gear and when I first engage 2nd before moving to 1st it grinds. Only when the engine is warm... cold it works fine. Any other solutions are welcome as well... If you think it is something else then the clutch. New slave cylinder fitted already and all air removed.

Unfortunately, you cannot change the clutch without dropping the engine/gear box. I'll defer to others that are more knowledgeable, but it doesn't sound like the clutch needs to be changed. A worn clutch normally results in slippage when the clutch pedal is let out (i.e. power is not being fully transferred to the gear box). The problem may lie in a worn release bearing. I don't believe that the release bearing can be replaced without again removing the engine and gear box as a unit. Even if the problem is only a worn release bearing, considering the amount of time and labor required to get to the darned thing, it would be wise to renew the entire clutch and release bearing. I hope that someone has a simpler solution.

Hi Job....as above....clutch or release bearing is engine out......has this issue only just started....youve changed the slave cylinder......is the pushrod adjusted correctly......are you really sure you have no air.....double check befor getting serious and getting the engine out....Steve

Well when I lightly touch the clutch you hear the bearing squeeking softly... I will double check the cylinder for air and rod length... but sometimes the clutch pedal also gives a hard stop when engaged and does not go further. I assume the axel presses against the bearing then instead of entering.... I think the issue is there and I am forced to the engine pull.... Did that a few times before but will try from the bottom this time. I don't like the 200kg+ engine hoovering over the nose.

There is a hole in the bottom of the bellhouseing you can look in through at the bearing as someone operates the clutch or use a boro scope....Steve
