S1 fhc. Hi should the centre console have a thin layer of foam under the leather cloth.

My 3.8 had none. Do you mean the sides or top? The top had leather.

The one I worked on recently had horsehair/foam stuff glued to the metal, I re-foamed it and pulled the vinyl over it tight to keep it smooth and I did the same on the top piece that I think was hardboard.

I am in the process of restoring my series 2 and it has a horse hair cover over the metal with a patterned cover
of rexine over the top, I bought all the materials very cheaply from a UK trim supplier and can provide his/her details if required. They also sold me the pre-stitched piping of the correct size to duplicate the original edges.
