#1 Oil Pressure Relief Valve

Post by SimonBrown » Tue Jul 04, 2023 6:30 pm

Hi All,
Trying to solve a high oil pressure problem on my Series 2 and strongly suspect the relief valve. The oil pressure is 85psi cold at 2000 rpm and 75psi hot at 3000 rpm, with a trusted mechanical gauge.
The relief valve (part no 11672) is unavailable and I am unable to check it properly. Although it opens manually with moderate pressure, compressed air blows past the piston instead of opening it.
Would anyone have an idea how I could test it properly or know of any solutions?
Thank you in advance
Simon

Thanks Steve for your help as ever.
Examining the filter head and assembly, my car has a plate between the filter and filter head which does not appear on SNG’s exploded plan, as per photo.
Does anyone know if it should be there or not? This is in addition to the pressure plate at the other end of the filter.
Thank you
Simon

Yes that plate is correct...you can see where its attached by peening...quite often they are missing.....Steve

As Steve says.
All the filter housings for the XK engine have (or should have unless lost) such a plate.

Otherwise the oil would enter and exit the housing by using the easiest low pressure path, which means not going through the filter.

Btw, on my 3.8 FHC the plate was lost and I have to refabricate one...
