#1 Back hatch cable - info please!

Post by malcolm » Thu Sep 21, 2023 3:50 pm

So, on tour in my 2+2.
Suddenly, can’t open the boot (back hatch)
The silver lever is just loose, so the cable has obviously detached from either the latch end or the silver handle
How do you access anything??
Can’t get in the boot other than over the seats
Ideas?
Malcolm

The cable has a barrel style end that fits the chromed handle.

The cable passes through the right hand side monocoque and thence to the latch, where it is held by a pinch bolt.

On the FHC the handle can be removed and inspected. They are die cast and can break.

With some effort you should be able to remove the rear latch to inspect; 4 bolts.

Thanks andrew, I’ll have a good look when I get home from France on Sunday. Meanwhile, I’ll carry on heaving the luggage over the back seat!
Does the chrome handle just lever out with screwdrivers, or do you twist/screw it out?

From memory it has a backing plate under the trim that is held in place with self tapping screws.

Have a look at the pictures in the EBay listing; they're pretty helpful.

Hi Malcolm.....pull up the small chrome lever and you will see a screw holding the surround in place...remove the screw...the surround is now loose and can move but can only be removed whilst the lever is lifted up.....note its fiddly and only comes out in one position...make a note as it only goes back in the same position....Steve

I've had this happen before. Before you start dismantling things, check that the problem isn't solved by simply pushing down firmly on the hatch with both hands directly above the area where the latch is located (you might need to bump it a couple of times whilst doing so). With luck the catch reengages properly, the cable snaps tight again, and the interior lever functions as it should once more.

When released, my hatch doesn’t lift but stays in the same position as when closed. But it is released, and providing you don’t have fingers like pork sausages, you can get your fingers in the gap to lift it. Thought I’d mention it just in case 🤔

Thanks, but I’ve tried pushing it up from inside and it’s definitively locked. I also tried pushing down on it firmly.
Pretty sure the cable is unattached
