Best engine oil??
#1 Best engine oil??
Hi all,
For the last 30years I have used Castrol 20-50 in both my S1 E type and XK120.
Now I see Motul 20-50 Classic oil being advertised at a very competitive price.
Have any of you had any experience of using the Motul product?
I have no problem in paying the extra for Castrol but if Motul is its equivalent then I may give it a try, depending on any feedback you may have.
Thanks in advance.
Richard

#2 Re: Best engine oil??
Loads of threads on this subject. I use my car a lot, and always use semi-synthetic oil formulated for Jags and Astons with flat tappets. It is only marginally more expensive than cooking multi-grade. More important than what oil, is to change it regularly. Change oil every year or 3000 miles, which ever is the sooner. I would never leave oil in an engine for two winters.

Thanks for your replies.
I was sure that there were several threads on engine oil but when I tried to do a search on engine oil, using several different key words, it wouldn't throw up any previous threads for me???

Steve, its no problem,
I have always purchased Castrol in their large 20 litre drum, but that is now approaching £200 whereas the Motul is under £100.
I've no issues with Castrol, other than the price!
I was just wondering if their where any downsides in using he cheaper oil which supposedly has the same spec.
And yes, I change the oil & filter every 2years or 2k, whichever is soonest.

I've used all the classic 20/50s, no problems, all seem to do the same job. That's on 40,000 miles of driving. I've used Millers, Halfords, valvoline, Castrol, Comma - I really don't think it matters that much. My engine still ticks over at 30 lbs pressure and runs at over 50 when really hot at anything over 2000 revs. Also clean as anything inside (I've looked! )

Valvoline vr1 20/50.. used this for years excellent oil, was the only oil used at JD Classics, according to the man (Derek) himself, figured if it was good enough for their cars it would certainly be good enough for mine, and redline MT 90 in the g/box, excellent stuff

Thanks for all your replies guys.
I’ve just found another 20ltr drum of Castrol 20-50 tucked away in one of my garages!! So no need to consider trying any other oil at the moment!
