I hesitated to post this question yesterday because I know it is virtually impossible to advise from a distance.

Took my E out on the Stilton Run yesterday and had a couple of episodes where, as driving following traffic, the engine seemed to cut out and in. The tacho needle thrashed about, then power was restored and the car drove as normal. What could cause this?

Then I remembered as, dozing in bed this morning, that when I first went to start the car in the garage, in the morning, I turned on the ignition, waiting for the fuel pump to stop ticking, and everything went off/on a couple of times, accompanied by a relay clicking somewhere to my left. Nothing more happened and I had our trip out with the two occasions of cut out/in ??

I need to use the car today to go to my friends funeral. Any ideas? Ta.

Obviously a bad connection somewhere, so firstly check all power connections around the battery. However, if the engine is also cutting out , you are losing ignition power. Could be the ignition switch failing, which is quite common. When it’s running, feel the key to see if it’s getting hot.

Good point Simon. I will check that too.

Also, I suspect it may be the 4TR relay/voltage regulator(??) (I'm not as familiar with these electrics as it seems I need to be.)

Oliver from the Splined Hub will bring a spare to the funeral. Hope I don't conk out on the way.

It's my ignition switch!

If I waggle the terminals on the back with the engine running, it's cutting out and in fast. Rat pie. Can't risk taking it out today.
