I was checking the oil dampers on my S3 Strombergs - removing all previous oil and replacing. However on the front/right carb I found that the oil I was removing had turned into a thin "mayonaisse". The only experience I have with this sort of thing is in air cooled cars if water vapour mixes at the top of the oil filler tube (for example if not getting the engine hot enough regularly to burn off any water vapour).
Is this the result of water vapour? How come in the carb damper? I also noted that the metal rod of the damper itself has surface corrosion so looks like this has been happening for some time.
I do drive the car regularly, and always for minimum of an hour to really get it up to temperature, including about 30 mins fast motorway driving.
Ideas? Solutions?
