#1 Ventilated discs for Volvo calipers.

Post by abowie » Fri Oct 04, 2024 5:33 am

I've been reading the caliper upgrade thread on JL.

A while back I got a set of Volvo 240 calipers for a 24mm ventilated disc.

Try as I might I never found a suitable front disc with the correct hole pattern, thickness and offset to use with S1 E Type/MK2 front stub axles.

Has anyone solved this problem and if so what disc did you use?

I know that you can do this because I have this setup on my S1 4.2 Coupe, but the PO is no longer with us so I can't ask him where he got them from.
Andrew.

Hi Andrew...if you dont get an answer you could measure the disc..then contact Brembo or other brake provider...they could possibly look up the dimensions..or just troll through the technical drawings on some of their sites....Steve

Yes. The S2 discs aren't ventilated. You do need to turn the discs down to 273mm diameter.

Does this help?

https://www.allrotors.com/brake-parts-search.php
Yes. Still haven't found a suitable disc yet (although 2 close ones).

This is a lot better than manually searching through catalogs.

I had a look, and S3 E type has the same disc as S2 XJ6 etc. For some annoying reason they changed the hole spacing from 114.3mm to 111.1mm

I have a set of S3 E Type discs that I machined down to size but I'm not sure if I'm game to drill more holes in it.

I'll keep looking though.

I contacted one of our local suppliers about a replacement set of discs to fit my coupe which has the ventilated Volvo calipers. They say they get them made and a pair is $500.

Hi Andrew, if the only problem you now have is the PCD for the wheel studs, it is a simple fix for any machine shop. Just a matter of filling the old disc holes by either threading them and fitting threaded slugs OR welding them up. Any machine shop with a vertical miller can then drill new holes for you using the PCD programme that is built into their Digital X, Y, Z measuring system on the machine. A simple and cheap job, if you were local to me I could do it for you. regards John.

Thanks Jack.

I've got a pretty comprehensive machine shop myself and I can do what you describe.

However I'd be happier of I can get discs with the correct hole spacing.

I do actually have a set on my 4.2 coupe but it's in storage off site and I'm currently recovering from some surgery so I can't access it.

And did you insist on being your own anaesthetist?

It's a funny game here.

Adelaide's relatively small, so the guy who gave me my anaesthetic has done so before, and I've anaesthetised him as well.

My mate is an oncologist, succumbed to his speciality, and ended up being “charcuté” (from charcuterie, geddit) by the people he had himself trained to do that ……
