Glove box lid lock.

Hi guys, I have a problem with my cubby (glove) box lock. I have ordered a new key, hoping this could help but I think it may be an internal mechanical issue. Before I undo the two small screws on the back, has anyone done a take apart on one of these locks? I fear that it may be loaded with a spring or springs and I could end up with an unrepairable unit. It would be great for a couple of photos or a few words on how the take apart and reassemble acts are best approached. Thanking you all in anticipation, best wishes, John.

John, take it easy and undo it over a bowl or in a clear plastic bag, though if you are careful nothing should go far. Very easy to get in, just note the orientation of the items as you remove them. Keep a thumb over the back as you release the screws and you’ll have no problem.

Thanks Geoff, I'll wait until the new keys arrive and have a careful go at it. I took a pocket watch apart many years ago after my grandfather said they are easy, just go slow. It went in the bin 2 days later, taught me a lesson though. Haha!!

John, it’s not difficult to have all the locks on the same key, I’ve done a few. You need a few old locks to swap leaves between and they don’t have to be E Type locks, lots of cars have the Wilmot Breedon (spelling?) locks.

Can I add a comment to go with Bob's pictures.
I spent quite a while trying to figure out what hd happened to my glovebox lock that was not working and how to reassemble it. Having found Bob's pictures it suddenly became clear as to what order and how to put it back together, but at first I did miss one relevant point.

In picture one there I did not pick up that both the sring (closed part) and the roller partr of the catch both go into the oblong hole of the long bar part of the mechanism. If you look at the picture you will see what I am referring to although I had missed the way these parts fitted together.

To insert both parts I found it easier to lay the bar over the roller -part of the catch and then using a tin tool like a paint scraper or Stanley knife blade, it was easy to slide the spring into the slot. So I hope this hellps others
