Fuel tank, repair

Does anybody have any experience of Por 15 fuel tank sealer, I pulled my tank today to replace the perished boot drain hose, sure enough the felt pad under the tank was wet and had corroded the bottom of the tank, I've got about 3 pin holes in it, is it best to replace with new or go down the sealant route

Have you searched on here for “POR”? Try that first and you can then search within the results for the word “tank”.

You may have found a few pin holes, but how close is the rest of the tank or even the local area to developing more of them? If you go down the route of replacing the tank, search on here for some of the comments to help make getting it into the boot easier, or should we say less difficult.

Although, I gave my new tank the POR15 treatment before installing it, just to make sure there is no exposed steel inside it.

I’ve used it on three tanks now. Two worked perfectly and one completely failed. On the one that failed, the final sealing paint just peeled away from the internal surface - preparation is key!

On reflection, I think for the cost of the repair kit, I would buy a new tank.

The tank has to come out anyway to seal it....and you will never be sure that after its done that it won't start pealing off....Steve

Any experience whether rust (pin holes) usually comes from the outside, and in the drain place (due to e.g. wet pad), or more from the inside, and at the front bottom part (due to water condenstation in gas)?

My rust has definitely come from the outside from sitting on a wet pad, I rang Hutsons today who said the new tanks are galvanised, I will probably go down the new tank route although a radiator company in Wolverhampton said they could clean the tank and weld new steel into the rusted area, they didn't recommend sealers though, said they had seen too many fail

If the rust is from external moisture and the tank's basically compromised, a new tank is probably your safest bet. Those pin holes suggest more damage might be developing.
