I know there are other threads about prop shaft, but none, to my knowledge, about the specific issue of how the rubber gaiter is secured to it.
As a matter of fact, mine was so perished that I could not figure out how it is affixed to it. I can see two options:
- the rubber is glued to the inner face of a metal collar (or inner ring), as colored in green in my attached sketch. In that case with what glue?
- the rubber is pinched between this collar and inner face of the female part of the shaft (in red).
I'd be grateful if any expert here can explain.


As for the other end of the gaiter, it is obviously secured by an outer collar, or ring, that is folded once in place around the yoke race.

Actually I knew this thread, and the photo you invoke. I was aware about the punching of the inner ring (I had to dismantle mine), but my question is how is the rubber gaiter secured to that ring?
However, reading this post more carefully I notice that Geoff Allam speaks about it being "bonded to the solid section". It looks like my option one. Do you confirm? What glue can be used to bond rubber onto metal?

Hi I just re read the post..Geoff mentions bonding a piece of innertube to the existing rubber as a fix....he dosnt say that the original fitting was bonded in place....I havent worked on one but imagine that the original rubber was just clamped in place by the ring being pushed in and staked....Steve

Yes, it sounds logical. I was somewhat unsure because of the very small space, if not null, between the ring and the inner diameter of my prop shaft. Indeed in my case the ring itself is a tight fit in the shaft, as opposed to the photo in the other thread.
However, the rubber being elastic, it can be tried

that clearly shows that the rubber is NOT pinched between the metal collar and the prop tube.
As it doesn't show how it is set inside, I can only guess that either the rubber is bonded to the inner face of the collar, or its end is moulded wider and pinched by the flat end of the collar against the recess of the prop tube:



It might be both options at the same time...

Interestingly enough, the photo shows that the gaiter has a moulded rim, for flexibility I suppose, just in front of the prop shaft.
