#1 Heated rear window fitting- HELP!!!

Post by UK Muppet » Tue Feb 25, 2025 3:36 pm

Please note that fitting a heated window is not the same as an non heated one.
The heated version has 2 wires attaching to the internal elements at the bottom edge, these wires pass through the rubber and then through the door frame.
I cannot find anything in the forum, manuals or books I have other than fitting a non heated glass or paying a windscreen company to do it.
I tried fitting the rubber to the door then inserting the wires and then installing the glass without success as due to the glass having tapered sides, it just keeps popping out.
Its probably more difficult as I am doing this alone, just as well because the air is quite blue at times.
I have now fitted the rubber to the glass and think this could now be installed to the door but wonder do I fit it from the outside or the inside of the door. :questionmarks:
The rubber seal collapses on the outside face so it makes me think the glass should be on the inside of the door and the seal worked over the door frame from the outside.
Can somebody please either verify this or maybe explain how they have successfully fitted a heated glass.
The wires can be sheared off quite easily if the glass jumps out of the seal, ask me how I know.
Now repaired but I doubt I would have the same luck if it happened again.
Thanks
Tony

Fit seal onto glass..Place onto outside of hatch....feed in the wires....hold in place with glass clamps.....from inside fold in the seal....
you can use a thick cord as per windscreen fitting to aid getting the seal in place....more info here https://forums.jag-lovers.com/t/coupe-r ... 373?page=2

Thanks Steve, I had found that on Jag Lovers but had forgotten about the suction clamps. I bought a set a long while ago for fitting the chrome strips when I get to that.
Will dig out the clamps and try again.

After many attempts at fitting the glass, in the end I threw the towel in. Not like me at all as I try to do everything I can by myself. I had a cut thumb and sore hands due to the glass fighting me at every attempt.
I used the vacuum clamps, soapy water, rubber mallet and just could not get the glass in. The best I managed was bottom and 2 sides in the rubber and then I managed to push the whole thing through the frame. It was close to receiving blows from the big persuader but I managed to step back and snarl at it for the last week or so.
I remembered there is a Jaguar specialist in Rochdale 10 miles away and I know he restores E types so I went to see them the other day. The young lady who greeted me told me they could not fit the glass but gave me a phone number of somebody that might. I called the chap and he came today along with another chap in a second van, I could feel my wallet emptying.
They looked at the door which is not on the car and after some teeth sucking and deliberation the door was put on a pair of trestles outside facing up and again the glass was fighting back but maybe due to the 3 of us and the use of WD40 the glass eventually gave in and is now in the door. Definitely at least a 2 man job.
Being a heated glass makes it very awkward as the connecting wires pass through the rubber and you have to start with the rubber on the bottom of the glass then fit the rubber to the frame all around which will keep falling off especially if its a little small. Then its a case of working the glass into the rubber or rubber around the glass but with patience it gets there in the end.
Wallet emptied I can now sleep again. Can't wait to attempt the windscreen.
Best advice is pay someone to do it no matter how stubborn or tight you are.
