#1 Brake master cylinder, spirolox circlip

Post by basilruler1234 » Tue Mar 11, 2025 8:04 pm

Good evening,

I am hoping someone on the forum may be able to help me.

I bought a rebuilt exchange brake master cylinder from one of the usual suppliers approx 4 years ago.

Yesterday I found a brake pedal with no pressure and the rubber boot, spring retainer and return spring having escaped past the circlip.

On closer inspection I discovered that the circlip that retains the spring and retainer cup, had been ground down into a 50p shape, to the point that the hole for spreading the clip was nearly gone. Furthermore there is no way that this clip would ever fully engage in the groove in the piston end.

The manual specifies a Spirolox circlip that should be used and not one that's been abused on a bench grinder. None of the rebuild kits seem to contain this item. Does anybody know if these are available anywhere please? Item 20 in the attached image.

Thankyou James

Thankyou, I've seen they're available online, but I'm unable to get good measurements of the piston in situ to determine which size I'll need without removing the piston and master cylinder entirely and causing a lot more work. I was hoping someone would stock or know the appropriate size.

If you want to fit a new one you will have to dismantle..
So why not do that and measure?...

I am able to slide the spring and cup over the piston in situ, I'd then fit the circlip and wouldn't need to remove master cylinder.

James, if you still need the dimensions, I may be able to take one apart and see what I have to measure. Let me know.

Hello, thankyou for the offer but I found the spirolox part number on the Jag lovers forum.
If you Google spirolox they do seem to be available, however getting the one you want from a UK supplier is another challenge. I ended up speaking to the french European supplier who gave me a UK supplier. Minimum order quantity etc so I have a few spares now. If anyone ever needs any further info feel free to message me.
