The 'E' Type Forum

I'm looking at the manuals and seeing some great diagrams in the 3.8/4.2 version:







However, try as I might, I can't find equivalent diagrams for the Series 3. I'm under the impression at least some of the 4 1/2" track change between Series 1/2 and 3 is in the arms, the remainder being in the engine cradle. Am I missing something. Does anyone have equivalent diagrams?

I have the same question in reverse at the rear. In the Series 3 manual there is a great diagram of the lower arm:



...but this information is absent from the Series 1/2 manual. Again, am I missing something. Does anyone have equivalent diagrams, or at least the associated dimensions?

Do not take dimensions in the service manual as "gospel"...copied from another post on the forum in a quick search

Great to know! It does explain a lot!

Right now I am scraping together data from multiple sources - including but not limited to a detailed 3D scan up underneath the car. The different dimension threw me for a loop - I was wondering if I was looking at some strange kind of frankenstein.

I'm definitely interested in principle of how much of the track change comes from the arms and how much is in the birdcage/cradle at the front/rear. The cradle is obviously very different for very sensible reasons. The rear cradle is less obvious to me.

Hello Damian,
There is no difference between the Rear Suspension Cradle of S3, S2 and late S1 cars. There is a difference in the construction of early S1 cars, but not in its suspension and drive geometry The difference in the Track of an S3 car is all in the Control Arms and Half Shafts.

Is there any data on the fronts? My casual waving of a tape measure suggested "about an inch" was in the arms, but I wasn't very definitive. Hence I was looking for equivalent drawings for the front, too.

I have eagerly studied the entire thread, Clive and I are comparing notes enthusiastically. It turns out we have a similar history and career paths, so we talk the same language.

Clive didn't bother measuring the things he knew he was going to change, which was very sensible but not helping my particular quest.
