Great my starter motor is not as good as I thought it was and looks like Its another item that needs a rebuild or replacement. Before I procure the direct replacement what experiences have people had with the high torque starters?

Are there any good ones out there? I hear rumour that they only engage around 60% of the flywheel teeth and that's not a good thing....

The Rob Beere one is very good but you need to make sure you DO NOT use the original spacer. Rob's motor already has the dowels and is designed to fit directly to the casing. The SNG motor is cheaper and seems to do the job.

Not heard about the 60% thing. I replaced mine because when things got really hot in the South of France the starter became very sluggish. The high torque motor fires the car instantly though.

I got mine via a friend in the States and its been in the car 5 years or 10K miles and works perfectly. Not heard about the 60% problem either. I know a few E-Type drivers who have them and none have reported any problems.

+1 Got mine from VSE, previous one via Hutsons both perfect.

Ok perhaps the rumours are unfounded - I was sure that I had seen it posted on the forum somewhere but I cant find it. Perhaps it was another forum altogether.

Chris another option is Cambridge Motorsport I have used there products on a few projects with good results and no reliability problems

Hi, I purchased one from the auction site. Well known make using american internals. This failed and i replaced with one from Cambridge Motorsport.
this was (and is fine) would recommend

I have just bought a high torque starter motor from SNG Barratt (part number USM003). Does anyone know if I should use the original spigot plate and dowels as used on the original motor with this high torque one? Barratts are not sure and have referred the matter to the manufacturers. I'd feel happier knowing the correct way from someone who has fitted one.

i didnt buy mine form SNG to be honest but I was told to use the plate and dowels from the original starter. I can confirm that my starter works :)
