#1 Stone chip protection on the external boot

Hello all,

My tub will soon be in epoxy primer, but prior to final coating, how do people finish the external boot skin?

I.e. should I apply stone chip (I’m looking to use U-Pol Raptor (other paints are available…)) before the finishing coat or should I not worry about any stone chip?

I’m just not sure how the final finish comes out? I only had rust/bodges/holes/8 layers of filler and paint when I started the project… far from original.

Richard, this is an example of where the search facility will really help you.
I just searched for “stone” then within the results searched for “chip”. Over fifty results. With quite a lot of views of where and how to apply. I’d like to think you’ll get all the help and advice from reviewing them.

Cheers

Hi Geoff,

I did have a look but I couldn’t find a definitive. Some questions raised about the affects of the exhaust heat on underbody coatings too, just something I’m now mindful of.

However, on the Jaglovers forum I found this image

You can see the interface line on the boot where the stone chip stops and the top coat continues. Is this what most people have done or from the forum’s experience, should the stone chip cover more/less?

Thanks.

That more or less agrees with what I’ve done. Though whether it is “correct” who knows. Go with what you feel looks good and will do a proper job of protecting the underneath from stones flying up from the wheels.

There is no "definitive" not least because the factory didn't apply the stuff. Over the years the nature of the product has improved to be much less visible so unless you're in the concours game it's used much more than it was.

Taking the clue from the name you want it to be where stone chips are going to be a problem so that's the wheel arches and immediately behind them. That could include the lower outer sills.

With regard to the photo you've posted, I'd suggest that the stone chip goes unnecessarily far across the middle of the boot floor - but no one is ever going to see it so what the heck - but needs to extend further immediately behind the rear wheels given that stones thrown up by the rear wheels can reach unprotected paint.

If exhaust heat is a realistic concern then don't put any down the middle of the car. If you're driving with such vigour to get stone chips in that area you're using the car to it's max so good on you and you'll have your hands far too full to worry about stone chips anyway
