Hi guys.. can anyone recommend a complete oil temperature gauge kit (mechanical).

There’s plenty around but having never fitted one I’m a bit lost as to where the sender is placed on the engine.
And all this bsp fitting etc is another language!

I’m presuming removing one of the oil gallery plugs?
I have a mechanical oil pressure At present running from the filter housing.

The kit comes with the fitting below..

This gauge comes complete with a temperature capillary tube in options of 7, 9 or 12 ft lengths with a 3/8" BSP female fitting with a 3/8" to 3/8" male to male adaptor.
Any help appreciated..

I wouldn't use an oil gallery plug, as you could well impede flow with a sending unit poking in there. Generally speaking, you want to measure oil temperature in the main oil reservoir, i.e. the sump. You can remove the sump and weld in an additional boss somewhere well below the normal oil level, use the sump plug hole, or the bypass oil return hole, with a suitable mod to the return oil line.

In one of my earlier E types I used an electric oil temp gauge sender as a sump plug with good results. Unless you are racing, though, an oil temp gauge doesn't serve much purpose, other than to give you another distraction from the road :) As I recall it took a good long while for the oil (9 qts!) to get up to full temp (200F+), something like close to an hour of normal driving.

Yes I agree with you with regards to the oil gallery plug, makes more sense to locate it in the sump, another distraction.. yes never thought of that either!
