#1 Convertible roof - Series II OTS

Post by BlackJag » Fri Sep 19, 2025 4:50 pm

Above is my old roof installed 30-35 years ago.

The new roof installed this week has two (what I'm calling) fold-over straps whereas the old one only had one.

Am I correct that the old roof was manufactured incorrectly as there are three cross bars in the roof's metal frame and only the middle cross bars were covered with the fold-over strap?

Also, do I need the two wind vibration dampers that go on top of the two straps going from the end of the rear of the roof over the far rear cross bar to the middle cross bar on the roof's frame? They are not in the Jaguar spare parts catalogue for the Series 1 and 1.5 models or the updated parts manual for the Series II cars. II have seen them in photos somewhere. Are they available anywhere for sale? I do not see them in the inventories of North America's major Jaguar restoration parts suppliers. If not, are there directions on how to make them (size, materials, etc.)

You state you have a series 2. The diagram you show above appears to be a series 1. The S1 has 3 bows, the S2 has 2 bows.
I found this photo in the S2 section, factory fit, post 11, scroll down many photos. I think it may answer your questions.

Thank you Tom for the information and the link to the unrestored car,

The top frames for the Series I, II and III OTS cars are all the same.

The pictures on the unrestored car do show that the rear bow is covered by the strap. The wind vibration piece is also shown helping me a great deal even though neither of my old and new roofs have the middle strap to place it on. The manufacturer of the new top, Prestige Auto Trim, claim that their tops are exactly correct, but, if so, why is the centre strap missing.

The unrestored car is a North American model based on the carbs. My car has three SUs and Jaguar can not tell me where it was originally sold so it is judged as an European model and is also 2,868 cars earlier than the unrestored car.

You do realise that the s3 OTS door and cabin is six inches longer than the earlier series cars? Trying to fit a s1 or s2 roof onto a s3 will leave you with a free six inch sunroof....

kind regards
Marek

My error. You are both correct. I looked at the online catalogue for a well-known USA Jaguar parts dealer, Moss Motors, which used the same frame image for all three series of the E-Type.
