#1 Tolerance for rear wheel bearing..

Post by Paul bow » Sun Jan 18, 2026 11:23 pm

Hi guys, so doing a bit of upgrading on the e type 69ots.
Noticed a bit of play on the rear wheel at the hub area.
So holding the wheel (car in the air) at top and bottom (6 o’clock) I have 2mm of play in the wheel pulling from the top and pushing at the bottom..
My question is without stripping down and doing the end float business on the hub, would that sound like it’s within tolerance.
This car is not on splined hubs but D type alloys and studded.
I measured the 2mm by a long steel rule vertical fixed to the wheel, and using another attached to the bodywork at a right angle.

2mm is just under .080". That seems high to me. How does the other side compare?

The other side is exactly the same..only had it all rebuilt 2500k ago, by a very well known specialist in the jaguar irs field. Never checked it then, just noticed it now.

Hi Paul the correct way to measure is with a dial guage..the in/out movement......if doing it by hand then you should just be able to feel a very slight movement if it was set to service manual spec...to me 2mm sounds way too much....there is a lot of discussion re how taper bearings should be set up either with end float as per the service manual spec or with pre load....personally I set mine to 0(zero).....Steve....shouldn't be difficult to re set ..just measure correctly...undo the castle nut and swing the hub carrier off the driveshaft....refit a measured spacer to close your bearing gap....reassemble
