#1 Shims on outputs of diff.

Post by kgb123 » Wed Jul 08, 2026 8:31 am

Morning,

Just in the process of refitting brakes back onto the diff and I've a question about the shims that are on the diff, between the main body and the output housings for the drive bearings.

I had my diff overhauled and checked out by Alan Slawson some time ago so haven't got involved with it until now when rebuilding the IRS. I did a search on the forum, lots of chats about various aspects of diff stuff, but most well over my head.

Are these shims ( three on one side and one on the other) simply to do with setting up the Diff correctly, with no involvement in camber angles, or do they also form part of the camber angle setting?

I'm working on the assumption that the diff as returned from Alan is good to go and my plan is to simply put the same shims back in place between half shafts and brake disks when I get to that part of the rebuild.

Cheers

Hi Kev....A diff from Alan will be good to go and nothing to go with camber.....you will possibly need to shim the discs and calipers.....then the shims between driveshafts and discs set your camber....Steve

Thanks Steve,
Pretty much what I'd thought in terms of Alan having done the diff.
Usual contradictory stuff from searches on line (a lot AI generated I'm guessing) so thought I'd better check.
Will shim half shafts to discs as they were when dismantled and take it from there.
