5 speed for 3.8 on a 4.2

Hi

Does anyone know if a 5 speed for 3.8 can be used on a 4.2 (series 2 but the engine is from a 80s xj 4.2)
I have the oportunity to source a new box ( e type fabs) , but it was purchased for a 3.8 engine.
To gether with the gearbox I get a bellhousing , flywheel and clutch, but I also have all the parts from my series 2. Can I get it to work, and if so what mix and match of parts do I need?

That's a great question.

I may be wrong here, but the gearbox to bell housing adaptor plate may need to be changed due to differences between the Moss and the all-synchro gearbox. This probably isn't easily available other than from E Type Fabs or other suppliers that do a similar conversion using the same gearbox.

Hopefully, others will know more.

Yes hopefully someone can give some advice as I need to move fast but dont want to end up with it not beeing usable for me. I have to purchase a complete driveline, but thinking to sell the 3.8 engine and other parts I dont need to recoup some of the cost.

The 3.8 bellhouseing can be used straight onto the 4.2 engine .....you can use either a 3.8or 4.2 flywheel.....you starter motor needs to be a 3.8 unit if useing a 3.8 flywheel......if you use a 4.2 flywheel then you need a high torque unit that fits a 3.8 bellhouseing but has a pinion to mate to a 4.2 flywheel.....can answer questions but nor till after 8.00 tonight....Steve

thats great news, I have a high torque starter for 4.2, but I also think the package includes both 3.8 flywheel and 3.8 starter. So this sounds promising.

Was this gearbox in a 3.8 E type? Was the gear lever in the correct position?

never been installed so not sure, the seller has just bought a lot of parts and the project has stranded

OK so you need to find out if this particular 5 speed fits an E type....with/without modifying tunnel......why do you say its a 5 speed for a 3.8?....
What 5 speed is it?

I was planning to buy it myself around 2019, but was discomtinued
It was runned by a guy name Uryk, and I think he still makes stuff but no longer the gearboxes

I’ve heard that there is a very real chance of those being made again by Uryk.
However, no one can give a date as to when…
I’ve spent some time lately doing my homework on which is the ideal one to have given that the Guy broad box (which I wanted, but left to late) is no longer available..
From what I can gather the Uryk box is great but can be a bit tricky to find reverse, especially when cold.
I’m sure there are others that have had no such problems, I’m just passing over some of the info I’ve gathered from very reliable source's..
ATM the only other is either a supra box, or T5, if I were u and it looked good I’d snap it up.

Yeah, I will call the guy tonight and see if we can make a deal. If not I will go with elite transmissions, they will have it available in a few months.
Have been looking at the jaguar offering as well, but given the price it needs to be superb, and to me it seems like a regular t5 with a jaguar branded housing

So I ended up buying this lot
But not sure what to do here and what engine to use.
I have a rebuild 4.2 out of a xj, and I have the full efi kit from magnoletsi (or what his name was), I also have a big bore exhaust with manifold from classic fab or what the name was (been years since I bought this)
The lot I purchased have a rebuild to fast road spec 3,8 from classic car engines uk with weber carbs

I really want to use the efi and throttle wire and all that, but I think the 3.8 engine might be better than what I have (given the fast road spec)
But I seem to remember that nothing is shared between 4.2 and 3.8 so that I cannot use the efi kit (and intake manifold) and the tubular exhaust manifold from the 4.2 on the 3.8.
And If I was to use the 3.8 as it sits the cooling system is different.

Any advice on what route to take here? The car has been sitting for years now and now I have some momentum to work on it again.
