I have 420 uprights on my series 1 car (although I think they are actually the same as series 2 Etype) and purchased the sealed for life lower ball joints from SNG which their advert implies fit all classic Jaguars anyway.
I have removed the rubber gaiter to fit the ball joint to the upright but it is absolutely nowhere close to fitting. I have checked the part number and that was correct so I have to be doing something wrong.
It looks to me like the upper part of the balljoint casing impacts the suspension upright about half way up the casing. This leaves a gap of about 7mm between the balljoint casing and the upright.
I cant see anything else on the balljoint that comes off. Suggestions please?
I will try to take some photos tomorrow

Same source, same part fitted my S2 uprights fine <shrug>. You do need to trim or fit shorter bolts as the flange is thinner and the originals stick up through the base ofthe upright.

There is a ring on the lower part of the upright which, when the part has seen service , looks as though it is an integral part of it . This has to be removed before a sealed for life balljoint can be fitted . Take a rod and small hammer and lightly tap downwards on the lip and you will find that it should gradually disengage

Aha. Thanks Chris. I will take a look at that tonight. Now I wish I had trial fitted it before nickel plating the uplight :(

I think I can see what you mean Chris and this taps downwards out the bottom?
Its a bit reluctant but I guess 50 years and a good coat of nickel plate will make it a tad stiff to move.
I'll persevere when I have a little more time.
