#1 Sports coils and plug gaps

Post by andyp » Sun Jun 01, 2008 4:04 pm

A little while back the subject of plug gaps was raised. In particular what gap to run with a Lucus sports coil.

I had left my plugs at the standard 25 thou although the coil is supposed to support a 40 thou gap.

New plugs went in this afternoon, Champion Double Copper Core :? - the charge travels 6 ft along bits of HT cable, through a distributor and God knows what else and a bit of copper inside the plug electrode is meant to help! I digress.

I set the new plugs to 30 thou (being an only slightly up to date bloke) and the old girl does feel slightly happier. It could all be in my mind but there were certainly no ill effects. I need some high speed runs to really know and that is not something I like trying on Sunday afternoon as the garden centres kick out.

Who knows I might go a bit further next time.

No sign of the spark breaking down at high (by XK standards) revs and load.

If I get bored I'll open them out further to 35thou and try again.
