#1 How remove steering wheel nut?

Post by pip007 » Thu Jun 30, 2011 3:46 pm

I'm having trouble removing the 1" steering wheel nut so I can get the wheel off and renovate it. Car is S2. Has original wheel. The nut is on rock solid. I've applied penetrating oil but still won't budge. Hard part is trying to stop wheel and column turning while applying force to remove nut. Just wondering it anyone has a 'trick' for doing this that won't damage the wheel.

No real trick. If you can get someone to hold the wheel while you apply force that will help. it is a very fine thread so will hold extremely well!

And just to give you an idea, it can sometimes need up to 100 lbs/ft to shift it. I use as long a lever as I can , up to say 18 inches long- either a torque wrench or sometimes a bar with a box spanner over it to increase the lever arm length, and it often helps to put the car over on full left lock

I have a S1 FHC with original wheel and cannot get the horn boss off.

Is there a specific technique? Or likely to be glued on?

Thanks

THere are 3 slotted grub screws that hold the wheel on. They are located on the steering wheel boss quite close to the wheel. Look carefully - they should be there.

BINGO! I got it off! Full left lock and a long bar on the end of the box spanner and off it came. FYI, the 3 grub screws hold the boss in place (on the S2 at least). My boss was glued on as previous owner must have broken it trying to prise it off. I eased it off gently with a screwdriver. Once the 1" nut was off the wheel itself slid right off. Thanks for the tip.

Here's a useful article on renovating the steering wheel. I'm following these steps and so far its looking good.
