What are people's experiences of clutch servos ? If you use one, what assistance ratio do you use (2:1, 3:1 or even 4:1) ?

The difficulty will be one of space . However, it should not be insuperable. I do know that people have used the late MGB remote servo to power a clutch release mechanism on landrovers , and this has the advantage that parts are widely and readily available . Incidentally, is yours a 3.8 or a 4.2 - the latter , being diaphragm, are much lighter than the spring clutches on the 3.8 . I would have thought a 3:1 ratio was probably the best compromise between lightness and feel

It would be for a 4.2. For me the pedal pressure is fine, but it is a bit too much for my wife.

Has anyone done this? 1.9 or 2.1 to 1 in line servos are readily available so I'm up for some experimenting.

The other option to help make the clutch action lighter is to fit a .625 clutch master cylinder. Apparently MarekH has done that on his V12.

I'd never even heard of a clutch servo. The stuff you learn on forums...

Me neither - but I am not sure why you would want one. I have not found the clutch to be excessively heavy assuming all the components are in good form. You could always let some air into the system if you want a lighter feel :)

My oldest, trying the E-Type’s clutch for the first time complained “I need a friend to help me with this on long journeys”. He was used to smaller cars with feather light clutches. He was also used to brakes servos that needs only the lightest of touches on the brake pedal. And power steering on every car he’s ever driven.

A friend called recently to say his E is in the workshop having a power steering unit fitted to the column. Don’t recall which one.

My car remains as it was in 1967. Once I get too soft to press any of the pedals, or turn the steering wheel without a friend to help, I’ll give up driving old cars. Probably won’t be able to by then unless the car has an electric motor and solar panels on the roof and tyres made out of recycled underpants and a brush to sweep little bugs out of the way when in motion, and a certificate signed by Chairman Corbyn giving me permission to use the car for non essential journeys.....

(I fully understand the SWMBO point - mine will never ever drive the Merc, which she calls „the boat“, nor any of my old cars). Pure fear.
