#1 normal temperature and revs

Post by jonhall88 » Thu Aug 18, 2011 11:09 pm

My series 3 v12 seems to have a high tickover when warm revving at approx 1300 also the temperature gauge is reading half way between cold and normal (new thermostat fitted no change). I havent had the car that long and am waiting for a service manual to turn up in the post so any advice would be welcome. It may be as simple as fitting a new sender unit but I dont want to start fiddling without the specs (especially with the tickover)
Has any one ever complained about being cold in the v12 !!!!
Also did all ser 3 v12 cars have head restraints and inner dorr armrests / closers as mine doesn't. Just for interest that one as I dont really care

Hi Jon and welcome
The best thing you can do with the car now, irrespective of what anybody else has done with it and when, it to give her a good service. All the oils, filters, brake fluid and most importantly on the V12, the coolant.

The ignition system will need to be overhauled (HT Leads, plugs etc.) and the carbs cleaned and set up, maybe having the diaphragms replaced (a weakness on the Strombergs). Test the compression and set the tappits...a tight valve clearance can cause irratic tickover, which can be seemingly compensated for by increasing the tickover rpm.

Use a flushing agent on the oil and flush the cooling system prior to replacing with new coolant.

If you can't find reciepts for work on the braking system within the past 5 to 10 years, budget on getting the master cylinder, servo and calipers overhauled and the flexi rubber pipes replaced

Once that lot is done you can start to bring the car back up to spec! Without that lot being done, you just won't know where you are with it, what may be causing what issue, and it may just be dangerous to drive if the brakes haven't been looked at in a long time. I'm on a bit of a crusade with this last point as three of my cars have failed this year....the S3 some 7 years after a complete brake overhual, and a couple of Lotus cars after about 10 years...even though I replace the brake fluid every 3 years.

The launch brochure for the car shows headrests, but the door armrests just aren't visible in any photos...I can't imaging that there was a period when the S3 didn't have them, as all other E Types did! Both headrests and armrests are easy to get hold of.

My tickover is about 600 rpm hot, but I've seen a couple of cars as low as 400...the old V12 is so smooth it will tickover happily at very low rpm. High tickover could be adjustment, or everything is just a bit gummed up through lack of use, stale petrol etc. Again, if your carbs haven't been cleaned / overhauled for a long time, it's worth doing. And don't do the carbs until everything else is done, including the compression test!
